Meteorological devices containing thousands of packs of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was required to halt operations for several hours when multiple of them floated into the country's airspace.
Aviation Problems
The temporary shutdown led to the cancellation of 30 flights impacting 6,000 passengers, with officials warning that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
Law Enforcement Actions
Border security stated that 25 meteorological balloons were detected entering Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with two of which ending up directly over the airport's airspace.
Up to 14 of the meteorological devices launched over the weekend drifted across the Vilnius area, which is home to Lithuania's primary metropolis and close to the Belarusian boundary.
Illegal Goods Seizure
A minimum of 11 balloons transporting 18,000 packs of illegal tobacco products have now been retrieved, though this number could rise, according to border security officials.
Cross-Border Contraband Trend
Although causing problems, authorities noted that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - Belarusian smoking products - are common occurrences in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
Since January, over five hundred weather devices have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were documented the previous year.
Neighboring Country Impact
Simultaneously, the north-eastern Polish territory, which likewise adjoins Belarus, has recorded more than one hundred incidents in which smuggled items were delivered from its adjacent country employing the balloons.
Illegal Transport Methods
When questioned about why smugglers utilize a approach that remains particularly vulnerable to weather conditions rather than simpler to operate drones, authorities explained that "Meteorological balloons are basic instruments used by smugglers - they are less expensive than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Representatives further stated that "Our services' aim is to confiscate the maximum possible quantities of contraband and to detain organisers and involved individuals so that such operations become unprofitable and present no risk to commercial air travel."
European Tensions
The recent incidents occur during a time of growing anxiety in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have resulted in flight interruptions across European nations.
Similar occurrences in neighboring countries have caused EU officials to accelerate discussions about strengthening air defences throughout the region.
