Individuals Coming Off Slimming Jabs Put On Weight Four Times Faster Than Dieters

Obesity treatment often requires ongoing approaches.

Fresh analysis indicates that individuals who come off blockbuster slimming jabs like semaglutide or tirzepatide may regain reduced body mass at a significantly accelerated pace than those who halt traditional diet and exercise regimens.

Published data in a major health publication shows that while overweight people frequently drop substantial amounts of their total mass while on the medication, the mass returns at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.

"Users buying such medications need to be informed of the danger of fast rebound weight gain when the medication ends," stated researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of recovery implies a return to pre-treatment weight in about a year and a half.

Comparing Treatments

The analysis, which reviewed dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the outcomes of GLP-1 agonists with other pills.

Researchers note that individuals who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone usually see a less rapid creep back—approximately 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.

The Reason for the Rapid Rebound

Nutrition scientists suggest the way of the injections explains the amplified rebound.

These medications imitate a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate appetite.

"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production may cause the system to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and may also lessen sensitivity to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.

"Withdrawal of this GLP-1 'fix' means appetite is no longer kept in check, making binge eating a significant risk."

A Lifelong Condition?

Medical guidelines recommend the jabs for people with weight-linked medical conditions, accompanied by prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

Professionals say that, given the significant potential of relapse, the treatment should be considered long-term.

This view is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who state that the findings "highlight the persistent nature of excess weight," akin to managing conditions like high blood pressure.

User Accounts

People who have stopped the medication report a powerful return of hunger.

"It felt as if something that goes on and I was suddenly extremely hungry," said one woman.

This challenge is worsened if patients have not adopted permanent dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.

Widespread Adoption

Survey data suggest that millions of adults in the UK have used these injections in the last 12 months, with interest continuing to grow.

  • Adoption is more common among females compared to males.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest usage rates.
  • A large proportion obtain the medications through private prescriptions rather than public health services.

Ultimately, clinicians caution that while GLP-1 drugs are potent tools for weight loss, they are not a permanent fix and long-term success likely depends on combined lifestyle changes.
