Zak Crawley Claims Ignorance of Stokes' Provocative 'Frail Characters' Remarks

England opening batter Crawley has indicated he was not familiar with comments from captain Ben Stokes about the dressing room as no place for "those lacking fortitude".

Stokes made those words in several conversations in the wake of England's loss in the second Ashes versus Australia previously.

Ahead of the Adelaide Test, where England now face a series loss with a match to spare, the captain stated he had allowed his sentiment to "circulate freely" among the playing group.

"I've done all the talking over the past two days that I required," said the England leader.

But, following Crawley made a knock of 85 on the fourth day in Adelaide, he stated: "I missed those remarks."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. Our approach is to take anything stated in the press with a pinch of salt," Crawley continued.

Raw Conversations and Steady Philosophy

The captain issued his "weak men" observation subsequent to his side were beaten in Brisbane to fall two matches behind.

The team afterwards took a holiday to a Queensland resort in the gap between the second and the upcoming Tests.

Prior to this match, Stokes said his team had held "honest" conversations and he had asked them to "display some fight" in their battle to stay in contention in the Ashes battle.

Yet, Crawley asserted the guidance from the captain and head coach Brendon McCullum had stayed in line with their prior tenure in charge.

"The atmosphere has been extremely upbeat, the same as always," noted Crawley. "It's just trying to be optimistic, play our way, with lots of freedom. We believed we could do something special entering this game."

The Hosts Close of Historic Series Victory

Crawley's dismissal late on Saturday came during a decisive triple-strike by Australia spinner Lyon.

The spinner's triple strike in a short spell – he also bowled Harry Brook and Stokes himself – meant England 207-6 in pursuit of a notional total of 435.

Consequently, the home team need four wickets on Sunday's last day to move to an insurmountable 3-0 advantage after three matches played.

A loss would prolong England's drought in Australia to 18 consecutive matches and ensure a fourth straight overseas Ashes defeat.

The current battle will be completed in only 11 days of play – after England fell the first two Tests in rapid time each.

The last time 1921, when Australia completed a series win in England in eight days, has the outcome of the urn been determined so quickly. Australia have also won in eleven days on two other occasions in the 21st century.

"This is disheartening," said the batsman. "We came here to regain the Ashes and now we are facing elimination at this point."

"There will still be significant pride at stake and we'll definitely view it with that mindset," Crawley added.

"The challenge has been tough. They're a formidable team. It was always going to be tough coming here against them. They entered as the favourites coming in to it have demonstrated their quality."

Pope's Position In Question

While the opener's performance in the third Test probably answers questions about his immediate place in the England team, Ollie Pope appears under immense pressure for his spot in the Melbourne Test on Boxing Day.

Pope was out for 17 in the team's second knock on day four, extending his poor record versus Australia.

Across 16 Ashes innings, Pope has failed to score a fifty and boasts an average of just 17.62.

Only one other English batsman in over a century – Dennis Amiss – has played an equal number of innings in the top order in Ashes Tests and recorded a lower average.

But, the opener said any notion his teammate is being scrutinised comes from "the media" – referring to the journalists – "and not within the team."

"We all know of his considerable talent," added Crawley. "He has had a good year if I'm honest."

"He has produced some really good knocks. It is noise externally. There's no discussion of that nature on Ollie in the camp," Crawley finished.
